What is paralysis?

Paralysis also known as “Plegia” is a kind of chronic disease in which nervous system does not working properly. Paralysis attacks occur when a person is unable to move a certain part of the body; during a paralysis attack, there is a disconnection of the body from the brain. Paralysis is usually of two kinds- partial or complete. Paralysis can affect either one or both sides of the human body. In some cases, just one area of your body gets affected, while in some other cases it can be widespread. When paralysis hits the lower half of the human body, such as both legs, it is referred to as paraplegia. When paralysis hits arms as well as legs, it is referred to as quadriplegia. In the majority of cases, paralysis happens because of strokes or any kind of injury like an injury to the spinal cord or a broken neck.

Symptoms

• Loss of function of a particular body part • Sudden confusion or loss of speech • Difficulty understanding what someone is saying • Weak or blurred vision • Sudden headache or dizziness with no known cause • Loss of proper use of arms and legs • Loss of control of the paralyzed body part • Difficulty eating/drinking/swallowing • Stool and bladder problems Loss of control • Tingling and numbness in the paralyzed limb • Inability to move the body ( sleep paralysis) • Occasional muscle spasms and pain • Tingling in the paralyzed area • Weakness on one side of the face etc.

Causes

• Traumatic brain injury (TBI) - Occurs when the brain is damaged by a sudden blow. TBI can occur when the head hits an object suddenly and very quickly, or an object pierces the cranium and penetrates brain tissue • Motor - Paralysis due to spinal injury caused by a car accident • Paralysis by taking mental work/stress. • Accident during sports or other type of activity • Multiple Sclerosis (i.e. brain and spinal cord disease) • Hypokalemia (low amount of potassium) • (Myopathy) Diseases related to muscle weakness • Rupture of the blood pipe going to the brain • Blockage due to blood clot in the blood pipe going to the brain • Post-polio syndrome • Muscular dystrophy • Family discord • Money crunch • Tension of daughter or sister's marriage • Business tension • Job tension • Extreme cold • Diabetes / Blood pressure (BP) paralysis due to side effects of taking English medicines for a long time • Paralysis due to the side effects of excessive use of English medicine and steroid medicines for any disease.

Type's of Paralysis

An inability to move the muscles of the face on one or both sides is known as facial paralysis. Facial paralysis can result from nerve damage due to congenital (present at birth) conditions, trauma or disease, such as stroke, brain tumor or Bell's palsy

lockded in syndrome is a rare neurological disorder in which there is complete paralysis of all voluntary muscles except for the ones that control the movements of the eyes.

Paraplegia is a form of paralysis that mostly affects the movement of the lower body. People with paraplegia may be unable to voluntarily move their legs, feet, and sometimes their abdomen. Some people experience incomplete paraplegia. This is the case when the paralysis only affects one leg.

Quadriplegia refers to paralysis from the neck down, including the trunk, legs and arms. The condition is typically caused by an injury to the spinal cord that contains the nerves that transmit messages of movement and sensation from the brain to parts of the body.

Monoplegia is a type of paralysis that impacts one limb, such as an arm or leg on one side of your body. This happens when damage to a part of the nervous system disrupts nerve signaling to the muscles in the affected limb. Monoplegia can affect the upper or lower body, either one arm or one leg.

Hemiplegia is paralysis of the muscles of the lower face, arm, and leg on one side of the body, In addition to motor problems other losses may occur. eg: sensation, memory, cognition. The most common cause of hemiplegia is stroke, which damages the corticospinal tracts in one hemisphere of the brain, other causes of hemiplegia include trauma eg: spinal cord injury; brain tumours and brain infections.

Diplegia is a form of paralysis that affects similar body parts on both sides of the body, such as both legs or both arm.
